“ The wolves are laughing on a still spinning record
A few spinning pills to ride us into the echo
A stone in the Russian Reich’s foundations
Your youth spat on you and just walked away “
Boris Usov (The Straw Raccoons)
Among the bands singing in the soon to be forgotten Russian language, Gosplan is probably the most interesting in the country. At least among the still existing projects that are active today on the undefined territory of our small, but mean motherland (I hope that the ones fallen into a long sleep – Пассакалия (Passakalija), Agnivolok and Этажи (The Floors) will forgive me for this statement). The style, without too much analyzing, is Siberian Rock, also known as Siberian Punk. For those totally unfamiliar with this genre, Siberian Rock is Гражданская Оборона (Citizen Defense), Янка Дягилева (Yanka Diaghileva), Инструкция по Выживанию (Instruction for Survival), Теплая Трасса (The Heating Freeway), Черный Лукич (The Black Lukich) and many more wonderful musicians playing this grim and penetrating music. If we do conduct some analysis, we will find traces of Yegor Letov, Dead Kennedy's, Death in June and other Dark-folk, Grunge, Thrash, Shostakovich, Absurdist Art, the Socialist Movements and Old Soviet Songs. Shortly speaking, Gosplan is a quite natural and genuine product of our great and horrible, recently vanished Soviet Fatherland.
Gosplan has but one major flaw – the band is a totally underground, almost secret formation. As a result, the concerts are rare and not easy to find out about, there are no normal studio recordings, at least to my knowledge. Of course you understand that official releases are out of the question. The band exists for quite a while – about 15 years, if I am not mistaken. Even in the difficult economical and cultural circumstances of Israeli life – it is strange that they didn’t record any serious work. All that the curious listener can get his hands on, if he doesn’t know anyone from the band personally, are a dozen “you tube” videos and information from the Russian site of NBP. I wish to quote the famous soviet slogan: "Art – for the Masses’
But for a handful of die-hard disciples, Gosplan’s concert is small celebration – a somewhat spiritual event, an insane nostalgic performance. Those people hear very well what Adolf sings to them from the stage – songs about fear, hate, death, beauty, love and freedom. In a wider sense, using familiar to the musician’s concepts of psycho symbolism, Gosplan is a large axe in the head of the covered with cosmetics cadaver of the Russian Musical Culture, which is rotting and decaying in the realm of Israeli Immigration.
It’s hard to say how long the show was, my sense of time was distorted. About 25 or 26 songs were played. In the end of each song people cheered loudly and screamed out encouraging words like “Good plan, God!”, or beautifully sounding in our Jewish state “Adolf is the best!” I can proudly say I knew most of the songs by heart. The most memorable were “No more light”, “All as one”, “Round and around”, “Burst of Machine Gun Fire”, “Awkward Words”, and of course “Handcuffs” - performed with an especially strong ardour. It could be felt that the guys were tripping in the right direction, as for the drive – it was a very powerful performance. Everything was played with precision and competence. The members of Gosplan can not be called virtuosi, but the music is far from being primitive, besides, complicated arrangements and highly technical solos will never fit this kind of music. In Gosplan’s case the form perfectly suits the content.
Leaving the lounge – which is actually a medium size backroom hidden behind a veneer door (Anyone who’s been to “Freeland” or read Pinocchio will understand me) I heard the music playing from the bar’s stereo system – a popular local band Los Caparos (The Homies) – also singing in Russian. The nauseating song was their major hit “c, c, c, p” – a song telling us that USSR is actually C.C.C.P, if red in English. A true masterpiece of nothingness and a very typical example of Russian manure ska (Leningrad, Distemper, the local SkaSka and many more). “c, c, c, p, - it’s very simple, c, c, c, p – lets sing together”. What can I say… Just think of that and of Gosplan’s “Thoughts have flown by quickly – in a straight black line; A horse-shoe cracked in two, shivers down my spine; Can not breathe, can not exhale, can not move a finger; All entries and exits swept over with cinder.“ This overwhelming contrast perfectly illustrates the general musical atmosphere in the country. The quality is beneath any criticism. The majority of the musicians are uneducated and talentless, others, in search of cheap popularity, are intentionally and cynically lowering their standards to meet the “zero level”. Anyhow, all this has nothing to do with Gosplan’s concert.
Hasta la Victoria siempre!
