So, on Wednesday we set out for “Scorching Haifa - 2”. From reasons not fully understood, we went out at 5:30 – the worst time to go in terms of traffic. Moreover, my friend’s good old red Volkswagen doesn’t have air conditioning, and the front windows stopped working (as they were up) somewhere near Glilot – so it was a freaking cook up drive. One might say that to suffer so much just to see a local gig is stupid, but I haven’t been to a show in Haifa in a while, wanted to see Dark Serpent and Prey for Nothing, wanted to check out this Beat club I’ve never been to and -  had an official invitation.

After a short food&beer tour around Haifa, we arrived to the Carmel Center, where the club is stationed. In terms of Haifa topography the Carmel Center is a cool (or should I say fancy) location for a rock club. The legendary City Hall was stationed in the deep-shit down town Haifa between Hadar and Vadi Nisnas, rest of the places like The Ant were in the hellish industrial zone bordering the Krayot. So go Beat, however, everything about this club seemed strange to me. Located just near the Zoo, it’s the lower and basement floors of a big apartment building. You can get there walking through a garden or a tunnel-like passage.

The place has ticket booths, long corridors, and a big lobby upstairs. As you go down there’s a roomy chill out zone and a mediocre sized stage area. I’d say the place can comfortably hold 400 people. (That would be 600 in the greedy Tel Aviv standards) The bar is very long, goes around corners and takes the whole side opposite the stage area, but you could drink only in a small guarded area…I’m not kidding here – cause of the kids, I guess – they see you with a beer glass and just go for your neck…

I couldn’t escape the feeling that I’m in some bizarre video arcade from the eighties; the fact that the place was pretty empty and the audience was mostly school kids enhanced that feeling. Scenes from movies like Videodrome and Children of Banhoff Zoo were coming to my mind. But get this, boys and girls – the sound there is just great – among the best I’ve heard in motherland’s clubs, and surely beats any Tel Aviv club except maybe Theatron. A very clear and what’s even more surprising – not too loud sound.

Well, to the music. Onoma were playing their second or third song as we entered. Surprised me for the best, I must say. Judging from their myspace – the band is just another member of the endless legion of them youth alternative/metalcore outfits. Live, however, the music is very listenable. The guys have nice stage presence and pretty good dynamics. I liked the minimalist, but intense drumming, good work on the vocals as well. One surely won't find any musical revelations in their material, but they have some style and are pretty much fun to watch and listen to, especially if you are over-flooded with beer and good mood as I was. As much as I dislike the style, I enjoyed their performance, though the music is just not heavy enough for me.

Laid8, on the other hand, are the essence of everything I dislike about the so called contemporary alternative music. Unfortunately, there isn’t one good thing I can think of to say about this band. Even the name is kinda lame. The music (perhaps as the whole genre) is a bunch of musical cliché’s from the last 20 years or so. Alternative, metalcore, pop-punk – it’s all in there. A sweet cocktail of anything played on MTV in the late 90’s. Song structure goes by the successful metalcore formula – rhythm section + quiet singing and then riff and memorable chorus – mostly just repeating the same line. Like – “There are no answers, only choices we make along the way.” Sure it’s catchy, but where is the god damned essence? Where is the memorable and unique style of the band?

They just remind a little bit of anything popular in the last two decades. The lyrics are uninteresting as well (except the Boudelaire poem, “The Living Flame”). And finally - the vocalist has a pretty weak voice and almost no range to it, it’s subtly felt in their recordings, but live it’s just in your face. Sure she can carry a tune, but not more than that. All in all, this band is a combination of unoriginal elements that seem to fail to work together. I wouldn’t be so harsh if the band was new, but they’ve been around for three years now, so there is no hope for them. Sorry, boys and girls. Nada. Unless someone invests a few millions and makes the next Spice Girls or the next Parkway Drive out of them.

 Next were Dark Serpent. I like this band – everything about them is appealing – the old school musical style, the fine playing, the lyrical themes, the fun they make out of the performances. Yes, they are awesome!!! It’s nice to have a local band in the spirit of the less primitive early thrash. But no rip offs – their material is original as the style goes, I would say. For me they are an improved version of early Kreator – with more attitude and American thrash influences. It’s the third time I see them live and by far it was the show with the best sound. Yes, the sound in this Beat joint is good. The beer selection sucks, though. Whatever. A very intense and dynamic performance, however shorter than I expected. Seven songs were played with some short jokes in between. Well, what can I say about people who put the words “Six, six, six” in the upper corner of their setlist and sign it “The Satan”. Our kind of people, boys and girls, and good musicians as well.

So, after writing how awesome they are, let us spill some shit. Serpent exists for more than ten years and still doesn’t have a good studio recording. WTF?!  All the shows I’ve seen were relatively short and consisted of almost the same material. New songs, god damn it! Longer sets, god damn it! An album, god damn it! Satan is watching you, guys, aren’t you ashamed?! Anyhow, a Dark Serpent performance is pure enjoyment, when I saw them for the first time I was excited finding this black jewel in our local scene.

Prey for nothing. The show before the go – since Israeli sound engineering and musical industry is so well developed, the band, like quite a few others, is flying abroad to record an album (Their second); several new songs from that album were presented in the show. The key term about Prey for Nothing is “musical quality”. They all are very skillful musicians with very good technical abilities and fine sense of taste, which allows them to avoid plain technical masturbation. Well composed, interesting and “tasty” music ( I especially like the bass lines, though all components are fine and fit in place), perfect cooperation between the musicians and a front man with great vocal ability and good stage presence all do them good. However, Prey’s music doesn’t really offer anything new in the style of melodic death metal, or outside of it. (That, my friends, happens a lot to bands that add the word “progressive” to their style description.) The new songs presented were fine, had the usual mild drive, but didn’t add much to the existing material. They did seem to be longer.

Anyway, the final verdict will be given after the album is out. I hope that "Prey" won't be chasing their own (musical) tail five years from now, but widen their musical approach. They do have the ability to do that.

The performance was pretty long – more than an hour for sure and as much as I enjoyed hearing them with adequate sound quality, towards the end I got a little bored. A lot of old material, the new songs, a guest appearance (was it the guy from “Of marbles black”? I don’t really know). A photographer unnoticeably crept in the dark behind the musicians, not only that he didn’t interfere with anything, but he actually added some grotesque element to the performance. The guys did well that evening, but I think a shorter performance would be “tastier”. Personally, I would have taken 15 minutes off Prey and give it to Dark Serpent to get the perfect metal evening.

So, we shell see what Prey for Nothing will cook us in the advanced studios of Abroadia. Good luck with that.

What really surprised me, and not for the best, was the amount of people in the audience. Sure it’s a Wednesday, but it’s also the summer vacation. The crowd was like 60-70 people, mostly kids. So where were at least another 60-70 kids? I dragged my ass there from the god damned Tel Aviv and what do I see? The locals don’t want to attend. There aren’t that much metal shows up north, by the way. So what is wrong? No advertisement? General mood? Plague? I don’t know, but it was quite disappointing. Four bands should be able to get at least 150 people. More than 250,000 people live in Haifa and something like 200,000 in the Krayot. And there aren’t 200 kids and a few grown ups to attend a metal show? Bizayon, north!

ביום רביעי נסענו ל"Scorching Haifa-2". מסיבה שאינה מובנת לגמרי, יצאנו ב 5:30 - השעה הכי גרועה מבחינת עומס תנועה. יתרה על כל, המיזוג בפולקסווגן האדומה והחביבה של חברי לא עבד והחלונות הקדמיים הפסיקו לעבוד (בעודם סגורים, כמובן) איפשהו ליד גלילות – אז התבשלנו לנו בנסיעה. אפשר לומר שלסבול את כל זה בשביל לראות הופעת מטאל מקומית זה טימטום, אבל מזמן לא ראיתי הופעה בחיפה, רציתי לראות את דארק סרפנט ופריי פור נאת'ינג ולבחון את מועדון הביט שמעולם לא ביקרתי בו, וגם הייתה לי הזמנה רשמית.

לאחר סיבוב בירה+אוכל קצר בחיפה, הגענו למרכז הכרמל בו ממוקם המועדון. מבחינת הטופוגרפיה של חיפה – מרכז הכרמל הוא מיקום מגניב (או יותר נכון מגונדר) למועדון רוק. מועדון הסיטי הול האגדי (ז"ל) היה ממוקם בעיר התחתית בין הדר לואדי ניסנס (די עמוק בחרא), שאר המקומות, כמו הנמלה, נמצאים באיזור התעשיה מהגהנום על הגבול עם הקריות.

 אז סחטיין מרכז הקאראמל; אבל חוץ מזה מועדון הביט נראה די מוזר מכל בחינה אפשרית. ממוקם ליד גן חיות, בקומות המרתף של בניין מגורים. ניתן להגיע אליו בהליכה דרך גן או דרך מעבר דמוי מנהרה. במועדון יש ביתני כרטיסים, מסדרונות ארוכים, ולובי די גדול בקומה העליונה. אחרי שיורדים למרתף רואים איזור ישיבה מרווח יחסית ואיזור במה בגודל בינוני. הייתי אומר שהמקום בקלות יכול להכיל 400 איש (או במובנים של מועדונים תל אביביים חמדנים – 600 איש). הבר מאוד ארוך ומקיף את כל האיזור שמול הבמה, אבל היה מותר לשתות רק באזור מוגדר ומאובטח נפרד – אני לא צוחק. כנראה בגלל הילדים – אתם יודעים איך זה – ילדים רואים בן אדם עם כוס בירה ביד וישר מזנקים לאזור הצוואר...

הייתה לי תחושה שאני נמצא באולם משחקי וידאו  ביזארי משנות השמונים; התחושה רק החמירה בגלל שהמקום היה ריק יחסית ושרוב הקהל היה מורכב מתלמידי בית ספר. סצנות מסרטים כמו Videodrome  ו-

Children of Banhoff Zoo    עלו בראשי. אבל תקלטו את זה טוב ילדים וילדות – הסאונד היה מעולה – זה אחד המקומות עם הסאונד הכי טוב ששמעתי מבין מועדוני ארצנו. מבחינת סאונד המקום לוקח כל מועדון תל אביבי חוץ מאולי התאטרון.

בקיצור – מומלץ להגיע.

נעבור למוזיקה. אונומה היו בשיר השני או השלישי שלהם כשנכנסנו. אני חייב לומר שהלהקה הפתיעה אותי לטובה, כי אם לשפוט לפי המייספייס שלהם – הם עוד הרכב מאותו לגיון אינסופי של להקות אלטרנטיב\מטאלקור צעירות. בהופעה חיה, לעומת זאת, אפשר לשמוע ואף להנות. יש להם נוכחות במה ודינמיקה טובה, אהבתי את התיפוף המינימליסטי אך אינטנסיבי, השירה גם הייתה ברמה. לא תזכו בשום התגלויות מוזיקליות בחומר שלהם, אבל יש להם סגנון וכיף לצפות בהם ולהאזין להם, במיוחד אם אתה מוצף בבירה ומצב רוח טוב כמו שאני הייתי באותו ערב. למרות שאני לא אוהב את הסגנון והמוזיקה פשוט לא מספיק כבדה לטעמי, נהנתי מההופעה שלהם.

Laid8, לעומת זאת, הם התמצית של כל מה שאני לא אוהב בסגנון הידוע כ "אלטרנטיבה" עכשווית. לצערי,אין לי אף מילה טובה לומר על הלהקה. אפילו השם שלהם די צולע. המוזיקה (ואולי הז'אנר כולו) היא אוסף של קלישאות מוזיקליות מעשרים השנים האחרונות. אלטרנטיב, מטאלקור, פופ-פאנק - הכל נמצא בפנים. קוקטייל מתקתק של כל דבר שהושמע בMTV בשנות התשעים המאוחרות. מבנה השירים מבוסס על נוסחת המטאלקור המוצלחת (והקבועה)– באס ותופים +שירה שקטה ואז ריף גיטרה ופזמון קליט – לרוב משפט אחד שחוזר על עצמו. וחוזר חלילה. לדוגמא –

 "There are no answers' only choices we make along the way" זה בהחלט קליט, אבל איפה התכלית לעזאל? איפה הסגנון הייחודי והמזוהה של הלהקה? הם פשוט מזכירים קצת מכל דבר שהיה פופולרי בשני העשורים האחרונים. הליריקה לא מעניינת גם היא,(חוץ משיר אחד של בודלייר – 'להבה חיה'). ולבסוף – לסולנית יש קול די חלש וכמעט נטול מנעד. זה מורגש מעט בהקלטות שלהם, אבל בהופעה חיה פשוט לא ניתן להתעלם מזה. היא שרה בלי לזייף, אבל לא יותר מזה. לסיכום – הלהקה היא צירוף של אלמנטים לא מקוריים שלא מסתדרים כל כך יחדיו. לא הייתי כל כך נוקשה אם זו הייתה להקה צעירה, אבל הם קיימים כבר איזה שלוש שנים, אז נראה שאין תקווה פה, ילדים וילדות. שום תקווה בכלל. אלא אם מישהו ישקיע כמה מיליונים ויהפוך אותם לספייס גירלז או פארקווי דרייב הבאים.

הבאים בתור, דארק סרפנט. אני אוהב את הלהקה הזאת – הם קורצים לי מכל הבחינות – סגנון אולד סקול, יכולת נגינה טובה, נושאי הליריקה, הצחוקים שהם עושים בהופעות. כן, הם מעולים!! זה נחמד שיש להקה מקומית שמנגנת ברוח של הת'ראש המוקדם הפחות פרימטיבי. ושום גניבות – המוזיקה שלהם מקורית ככל שהסגנון מאפשר. מבחינתי הם גרסא משופרת של קריאטור המוקדמים – עם תוספת של חוצפה והשפעות ת'ראש אמריקאי. זו הפעם השלישית שאני רואה אותם בהופעה חיה והפעם עם הסאונד ללא ספק הכי טוב. אכן, הסאונד בביט טוב מאוד. מבחר הבירות, מצד שני, גרוע. ניחא. ההופעה הייתה מאוד אינטנסיבית ודינמית, אבל קצרה ממה שציפיתי, נוגנו שבעה שירים עם כמה בדיחות בין לבין. טוב, מה אפשר לומר על אנשים שכותבים את המילים "שש שש שש" בפינה העליונה של רשימת השירים שלהם וחותמים "השטן"? אנשים מהסוג שאנחנו אוהבים, ילדים וילדות, וגם מוזיקאים טובים.

אז אחרי שכתבתי כמה נפלאים הם, בואו נזרוק קצת חרא. דארק סרפנט קיימים יותר מעשר שנים ועדיין אין להם הקלטה נורמלית. WTF?! כל ההופעות שאני ראיתי היו קצרות יחסית ועם  בערך אותה רשימת שירים. תכתבו  יותר שירים, לעזאזל! הופעות ארוכות יותר, לעזאזל! אלבום, לעזאזל! השטן צופה בכם, חברים, איך אתם לא מתביישים?! בכל אופן, הופעה של דארק סרפנט היא הנאה צרופה, כשראיתי אותם בפעם הראשונה די התרגשתי למצוא את הפנינה השחורה הזאת בסצנה המקומית.

פריי פור נאת'ינג. ההופעה שלפני הנסיעה  – כיוון שתעשיית המוזיקה ואולפני ההקלטות בישראל כל כך מפותחים, הלהקה, כמו רבות אחרות, טסה לחוץ לארץ על מנת להקליט אלבום (השני שלהם). כמה מהשירים החדשים שיופיעו באלבום הוצגו בהופעה. מונח המפתח בהקשר של פריי פור נאת'ינג הוא "איכות מוזיקלית". הם מוזיקאים מיומנים עם יכולות טכניות מאוד גבוהות וחוש טעם טוב שמאפשר להם להמנע מסגנון האוננות הטכנית. הלחנים בנויים היטב, מעניינים ו'טעימים' (אני אוהב במיוחד את קטעי הבאס, למרות שכל כלי הנגינה עושים עבודה טובה ונשמעים בדיוק במקום), שיתוף פעולה מושלם בין הנגנים וסולן עם יכולת ווקאלית גבוהה ונוכחות בימתית טובה – כל זה עושה להם טוב. אבל, המוזיקה של פריי פור נאת'ינג לא ממש מחדשת משהוא בסגנון הדת' מטאל המלודי, או מחוצה לו (זה, חברים יקרים, קורה הרבה ללהקות שמוסיפות את המילה "פרוגרסיבי" להגדרת הסגנון שלהן). השירים החדשים שנוגנו היו טובים, עם אותו הדרייב המתון שקיים בשירים האחרים שלהם, אבל לא הוסיפו יותר מדי לחומר הקיים. מה שכן, נראה שהם היו ארוכים יותר.

בכל אופן, הפסיקה הסופית תינתן לאחר שהאלבום ייצא. אני מקווה שפריי לא ירדפו אחרי הזנב (המוזיקלי) של עצמם חמש שנים מהיום, אלא ירחיבו את הגישה המוזיקלית שלהם. יש להם את היכולת לעשות זאת.

ההופעה הייתה ארוכה למדי – יותר משעה. וככל שנהנתי מהאזנה למוזיקה שלהם בסאונד הראוי לה, לקראת הסוף השתעממתי קצת. הרבה חומר ישן, השירים החדשים, הופעת אורח (האם זה היה הבחור מאוף מארבלס בלאק? אני לא ממש יודע). היה צלם שהתגנב והשתרץ לו אי שם בחושך מאחורי המוסיקאים – לא רק שהוא לא הפריעה, אלה גם הוסיף איזה אלמנט גרוטסקי למופע. פריי פור נאת'ינג די הצליחו – הם באמת נתנו מעצמם באותו ערב, אבל אני חושב שהופעה קצרה יותר הייתה יכולה להשאיר טעם יותר משובח. אישית, הייתי מוריד רבע שעה מההופעה של פריי פור נאת'ינג ומוסיף אותה להופעה של דארק סרפנט על מנת לקבל את ערב המטאל המושלם. אז נראה מה פריי פור נ'אתינג יבשלו לנו בסטודיו המתקדם בארץ חו"ל. בהצלחה.

מה שבאמת הפתיע אותי, ולא לטובה, הייתה כמות הקהל המזערית. נכון, זה היה יום רביעי, אבל זה גם החופש הגודל. בקהל היו כ60-70 איש, רובם ילדים. אז איפה לפחות עוד 60-70 ילדים? אני גררתי את עצמי מתל אביב הארורה ומה אני רואה? המקומיים לא באים. אין כל כך הרבה הופעות מטאל בצפון דרך אגב, אז מה הבעיה? אין מספיק פרסום? מצב רוח כללי? מגפה? אני לא יודע, אבל זה היה די מאכזב. ארבע להקות צריכות להביא לפחות 150 איש. יותר מ250,000 איש חיים בחיפה ובערך 200,000 בקריות, ואין 200 ילדים וכמה מבוגרים שיבואו להופעת מטאל? ביזיון בצפון!
